Personification of the nuts. Give them sort of characters with props. Perhaps different types of hats for each nut.

Using imagery of famous 'mad' people. For example King George III. He was apparently a bit crazy.

Going along the lines of crazyness, go for a more scientific approach. So I thought of the famous Ink Blot tests done by German psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach. These are very beautiful and could be used as a design theme through out the project.
