End of Module Evaluation

I think that this module has been a real learning curve for me. Like most people on the course I hadn't touched any motion graphics software or designed anything for motion graphics. I feel i did the right thing by deciding on a concept very early on, this gave me longer time to develop ideas for the title sequence and spend more time on making my assets.

Through research and a previous knowledge of all things Arnold Schwarzenegger I decided to go through a comedy route to reach my resolution. This is because most people my age and older have nostalgia for his films. Also his voice and face are very expressive which most people find hilarious. One major thing that changed through an earlier crit that was very helpful was to change my original concept from Arnie Quotes to Arnie Movie Moments. This was a good turning point in my concept development because it gave me a bit more leeway for design ideas and it sounded more like a real program.

One thing i am pleased about sorting out first was the music. The music is often over looked when designers produce motion graphics, but i feel its just as important as the visuals. I wanted to choose something rocky and a bit cheesy to go with the sequence and KISS 'I was made for loving you' ticked all the boxes.

The fifth ident i produced i thought wasn't quite good enough to make the(minimum) final 4 because only a small percentage of Arnie fans who had a very good knowledge of the film 'Total Recall' would understand the joke. Also two severed arms in an ident may be a bit rash for tv.

The language in the Dillan you S.O.B also was a slight concern of mine, but i think that the other idents would be enough to show through the day and then after watershed (After 9pm you can swear on tv) the Dillan one could be shown. Also the title sequence would be shown at 10pm as shown in the idents.

The biggest qualm i had with the motion graphics as a whole was that i couldn't find enough good quality images of Arnie, that is why some of them look a bit pixelated at times. After effects was a difficult program to get your head round at times especially when you go 3D. But i feel i am comfortable enough with the basics and understand masks, pre comps, cameras etc.

One main thing that i fell down in was the story board area. In the silent movie brief i had alot of storyboards. But in the top ten i didn't have as many, i feel this is because i wasn't that precious with ideas. And ideas come ALOT faster that storyboards. So when i did feel an idea was good enough i did a very basic storyboard. I do agree they give you many many ideas but they take a long time. So i felt that doing storyboards for every idea i had was slowing me down. It wont get me the marks but i feel that i managed my time better in this way. I feel alot more relaxed than last year even though we had loads of other stuff to do (essay, optional module etc.)

I wanted to keep the packaging simple, using similar colours to the idents/sequence. I choose that particular picture of Arnie becuase i thought it summed up the concept i was going for, amazing, riduclous and funny. The sleeve was originally going to be all one bit of card but the ink cracked when i folded it and it looked horrible. This is why the front/back are stuck on. This will make me research into stock further before I print out.

In my last ident i used the short but sweet quote or 'See you at the party Richter'

I changed the ident from the title sequnce by adding two severed arms falling down. This would make sense to Arnie fans who have seen the film Total Recall. Here is the video from the film..

DVD Design

This design works best, keeping it simple and the same colour. ive used the Arnie face that appears in the title sequence.

I think this design would be best if there wasn't type involved.

Sleeve Design

Some different designs for the back of the sleeve which i am going to put just my name and the code. keep it simple. I decided on the purple again because its a colour that appears throughout the idents and the title sequence.

I decided on this last one, because the font is clear and doesn't take over the whole sleeve.

Final Crit

Only a few problems that arose in the crit, mostly to do with audio levels.

Here are the changes i have made for the feedback i got for the Idents.

The treatment of the word 'right' should be different to show that their are 2 different people speaking. I tried different fonts, but it didn't work, so i changed the colour to show the different voices. Went with purple to go with the background

"I Lied" too quiet compared to the music. So i bumped up the levels.

And for the Title Sequence the main problems were,

-The arms move at different times

-Should make it look like they 'hit' the E4 logo rather than push it

-Kiss song is too loud through out compared to the talking.

Four Idents

Here are my four idents, i have 2 themes, one blue and one purple. This gives them a little more variety so they don't all look the same. I also added on the E4 logo and the time of the program at the end. I added a little 'slap' sound when the E4 hits the screen. I did this to give it a little bit of comedy a the end. Also gives it more depth to the motion.

End of idents

When showing my idents to fellow class mates, they said i needed to have a time and channel logo at the end. This i hadn't previously thought about so i did some designs to find a solution. The idents are only 10 seconds long so it would only be 1 or 2 seconds long. so i have tried quick movements and minimal text.

Ident Attempts

Here is my first attempt at one of the idents, i think the music works well when it kicks in after the quote.

Looking at the ident i thought that the colour difference was quite harsh with the blue then to the purple for the title of the program. So i changed the end title colours to blues/greens to go with the quote.

Ident Ideas

The main premise for the idents is to have one of the quotes by its self and then the music will kick in and the main title will come through from the centre.

. I have approached the design just as i did with the title sequence, with a focus on comedy. Thats why i have picked these particular pictures of Arnie because they are hilarious. I've used the same font on the designs as the title sequence to keep the design consistent.

How i did it,

Here is me getting a black t-shirt to wrap round my head.

I used tissue and painted tooth picks for the sheep with pen lids for the heads. The orange and red fabrics are pillow cases. Socks, cardboard, pens and scalpels for the trees.

Eggs, card, tooth picks, Garlic and pen were used to make the other animals.

Sequence so far..

Here is what i have so far, there are a few things that i think need to change. One being the levels of Audio of the Quotes. Some of them get drowned out by Kiss. The scream is also too loud at the beginning. A few of the transitions between scenes are not as smooth as i would like them to be also.

Design Sheet showing End title design ideas, need to be careful with hierachy of type, because 'Schwarzenegger' is such a big name it may end up being squashed to fit in, or looking smaller than the other words.

Screen Prints

After MANY attempts at screen printing my design i decided that these two were the best ones. Im still not completely happy with them because of the slight imperfections at the bottom, but the screen printing always gives it a nice aesthetic
